Measuring impact for your organisation

Are you having the impact on pupil or teacher outcomes that you want? Spending time analysing data, but not confident of how meaningful it is?

We help education and youth organisations in the third, private and public sectors to evaluate, maximise and share the impact of their work.

We work with organisations across the impact cycle

Your organisation might be at an early stage of your impact journey, wanting to develop its approach to monitoring and evaluation. Or you might be working through challenges like how to best collect data from schools or report to stakeholders. Wherever your organisation is in the process, we are here to support.

By working with us, you become one of our Impact Partners.

Self-assess your Evaluation Practice

We have developed a free, short self-assessment to help education organisations who are delivering programmes, interventions or services with young people or educators in the UK reflect on their monitoring and evaluation practice. This will provide you a report outlining your organisation's strengths and recommendations based on your own ratings, as well as how ImpactEd Evaluation could support you with next steps.

Take the self-assessment

Evaluation design

We support organisations in designing robust but pragmatic evaluations, starting with a Theory of Change process to define key outcomes.

Data collection

We provide organisations with the tools and capacity to collect high quality data, including the use of our School Impact Platform.

Analysis

We have experience analysing and interpreting a wide range of datasets, using methods from thematic qualitative approaches to inferential statistics.

Reporting

We are passionate about creating outputs that can be shared with key stakeholders in an accessible way that informs action.

Tailored to your needs

We support organisations in four main areas. These areas are not mutually exclusive: you may want support in developing your internal systems, while also commissioning an independent evaluation. We tailor our approach to your requirements and aim to build long-term, sustainable partnerships.

Our partnership principles

Regardless of partnership type, there are common principles for how we work:

Each partnership is managed by a dedicated partnership lead, with a background in the education or youth sectors as well as experience across research and evaluation

We are flexible and pragmatic: working with schools and young people is complicated and our evaluation approach can respond to your needs

We want to make evaluation accessible to all. This means we emphasise the importance of building the capacity of our partners throughout the work that we do with them. We facilitate learning opportunities wherever we can. We are more than data analysts - we want to help you maximise the impact of your work too.

Evaluation design

We work with organisations to build capacity for monitoring and evaluation internally, ensuring that the right data is collected and can be used to inform decision making. Our support typically involves three stages:

Theory of Change: Designing and reviewing a theory of change through workshops involving key stakeholders involved in your programme or organisation to help define the target outcomes that you are looking to deliver

Measures review: Reviewing literature and your current impact measures to suggest which measures would be most appropriate to use based on your outcomes identified in your Theory of Change

Evaluation design: Developing a formal evaluation framework which sets out the measures you will use to measure outcomes identified in your Theory of Change and the wider data collection rhythms and processes.

We take a collaborative approach to make sure the work is delivered to most benefit our partners, which might mean delivering bespoke sessions to meet their needs. We make sure our partners are ready to operationalise the approach to evaluation internally.

Examples of our work include developing an evaluation framework for the Country Trust, designing an evaluation strategy for Supporting Education Group and creating frameworks for Widening Participation (WP) programmes at University of York and LSE.

Usage of the School Impact Platform

Either as part of an evaluation or as a standalone solution, our Impact Partners can use the School Impact Platform to make monitoring and evaluation easier and more effective. Examples of our work include collaborations with social enterprises such as Jamie's Farm, Future Frontiers and CoachBright to use the platform to simplify access to school data and automate impact reporting.

Independent reporting

We work with organisations as independent evaluation partners, collecting data and analysing results in a meaningful way to understand what difference an intervention has made. These collaborations are flexible and can involve use of the School Impact Platform and/or build on a capacity building partnership.

We are particular specialists in innovative and quasi-experimental approaches to evaluation, including the use of comparison and control groups where randomised trials are not being used, and the reliable measurement of social, emotional and non-cognitive skills.

We deliver pragmatic approaches to evaluation using qualitative research methods and statistical analysis appropriate to the scope, scale and purpose of the evaluation, and the stakeholders that our partners work with. We prioritise the needs of our partners and can adapt our approach to providing external evaluation expertise accordingly.

Examples of our work include conducting annual evaluations of Oak National Academy, as the evaluation partner to evaluate St John’s Foundation’s Foundation Fund; and partnering with Challenge Partners to evaluate a number of their programmes including Excellence for Everyone.

Ongoing capacity building

In order to continue to build your organisational capacity for evaluation, we work in partnership with organisations to provide training and resources on different aspects of the evaluation cycle. Topics we cover include:

Introduction to evaluation design

Conducting qualitative research

Analysing qualitative data

Designing an effective survey

Quantitative data analysis

Presenting your data

Using the School Impact Platform

The School Impact Platform is used by many of our impact partners to make monitoring and evaluation easier and more effective. The platform helps automate data collection from schools, measure the outcomes of your activity, and streamline reporting of your impact globally and at programme level.

Access to the platform can sit alongside wider evaluation support, or be delivered independently from a broader partnership with ImpactEd Evaluation.

Platform

Target support

Easily track pupils benefiting from your interventions and understand the characteristics of your participants. Data access through the platform can be to anonymised data or to identifiable information, depending on your needs.

Platform

Measure outcomes

Analyse data collected directly from school MIS alongside access to validated measures of social and emotional skills such as pupil motivation or school engagement

Platform

Automate data collection

The School Impact Platform integrates with school management information systems so schools are able to securely share demographic, behavioural and attainment data without the need for data entry. Saving both you and your partners time.

Platform

Report on impact

Access live reports summarising the impact of your activities and effects on pupil groups such as PP, EAL or SEND. Organisations can aggregate and compare data across schools, while schools receive their school-level version of this report automatically.

04

Our impact

As a social enterprise, we are committed to helping you maximise your impact on the young people and adults you support. We do this by delivering independent evaluations and building your own capacity for monitoring and evaluation.

Measure impact

Understand and share the overall impact of your intervention

Improve implementation

Access mixed methods support to help identify which elements of your programme are working best

Tailor support

Use individual and group-level data to identify who your programme works best for, and who may need further support

Maximise investment

Share your impact with potential funders, and make the best use of your existing resources

Go beyond attainment

Analyse the wellbeing, motivation, and metacognition of young people

Build capacity

Develop capacity and expertise for monitoring and evaluation in your team

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions. Have another? Email us at impactpartnerships@impacted.org.uk.

What kind of organisations work with ImpactEd Evaluation?

We work with a wide range of education and youth organisations from third, private and public sectors with varied contexts. For example, we’ve helped university widening participation departments measure their impact in schools; supported edtech startups and youth charities in demonstrating efficacy; and worked with the Department for Education on large-scale evaluation projects. You can see more examples in our impact partner case studies.

How would I set up a partnership?

Start by setting up a call with a member of our team. They will find out more about your context and consider what support may be most beneficial. This could include working with you to develop your internal monitoring and evaluation processes, designing and delivering independent evaluations, or other research projects.

What costs would usually be associated?

Costs vary significantly based on the scope of partnership and staff time involved. For capacity building, this could often vary from between £3,000 - £20,000 based on need; for independent evaluations, costs are much more variable based on desired scope, length and reporting outputs. As a social enterprise we subsidise costs to organisations to provide maximum value and believe in building sustainable, long-term partnerships.

How is our data used and shared?

You can find more information on our data protection page. All data remains owned by you as the organisation rather than by ImpactEd Evaluation. We usually only have access to anonymised versions of data, so that we can help you in interpreting results without seeing confidential information about individuals.
