Making Evaluation More Inclusive: Case Studies from TKAT and Surrey Square

ImpactEd Evaluation have recently developed further symbol-supported measures that are readily available to all our Core partner schools, ensuring that more pupils are able to be represented within evaluation. These new surveys aim to facilitate the measurement of crucial social & emotional skills, such as wellbeing, metacognition, and school engagement. These surveys can be used by all pupils but are particularly aimed at younger pupils, those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), or those with lower reading ages.

Below we’ve noted two case studies from our partner schools, where collaborative efforts between the schools and ImpactEd Evaluation have led to the adaptation of our core measures, making them more accessible and relevant to a broader range of students.

TKAT ACE: Evaluation for Pupils with SEND

TKAT (The Kemnal Academies Trust) recognised the need to extend the benefits of their successful ACE programme, initially focused on Pupil Premium pupils, to students with SEND. ImpactEd Evaluation and TKAT worked together to ensure that this programme could still be evaluated effectively by tailoring measures to make them more accessible for their pupils with SEND. 

ImpactEd Evaluation researched the best ways to develop surveys for TKAT’S target SEND pupils and implemented two surveys catering to pupils with varying needs: the #BeeWell text-based short survey and #BeeWell symbol-based survey.   Alongside pupil surveys, a staff report survey was introduced to capture the perspectives of individuals closely involved with the students. These three survey options ensure that we are able to measure the impact of the programme on pupils with a variety of different accessibility needs. Baseline data has been collected from across 6 schools in this pilot, and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact of the programme in Summer 2024. Alongside pupil surveys, a staff report survey was introduced to capture the perspectives of individuals closely involved with the students. Surrey Square: Simplifying Measurement for Younger Pupils

Surrey Square Primary School use wellbeing and anxiety surveys with their KS2 pupils to ensure that they are able to monitor pupils’ wellbeing, and give support where it’s most needed. Understanding that these text based surveys weren’t suitable for their Early Years and Key Stage 1 pupils, Surrey Square embarked on a collaborative effort with ImpactEd Evaluation to develop custom measurement tools suitable for younger students. Surrey Square and ImpactEd Evaluation crafted a wellbeing survey utilising simple, short, scored questions, supported by emojis depicting emotions such as happy, sad, calm, and worried. These surveys mean that Surrey Square Primary School are able to effectively capture the experiences and feelings of all students, across a broader range of ages and developmental stages. 

These symbol-supported surveys are now used on a termly basis at Surrey Square. They are discussed in pupil progress meetings alongside pupil attainment data, and help to ensure that pupil wellbeing is at the top of the agenda.
