Tutoring: Exploring implementation and impact

The effective implementation of tutoring has been a major focus for us. As shared in a recent blog, since 2021 we’ve facilitated the delivery of over 300 school-based evaluations of tutoring through our School Impact Platform, and have worked with a range of strategic partners to deliver larger-scale evaluations of tutoring impact.

Academic tutoring as an intervention has been embedded in many schools for a number of years, though the delivery of the National Tutoring Programme has led to increased visibility and take-up in many cases. With the disruptions caused by the pandemic still evident in our education system, the strong evidence behind tutoring's impact makes it a key tool to support those pupils most in need.

We think this report will be a useful tool for those who are involved with or deliver tutoring in educational settings.

What's inside

While the findings in the report make no claim to be representative of the full evidence base on tutoring, they do point to a number of important principles. The report contains three case studies. These evaluations have examined data on different kinds of pupils: primary and secondary pupils as well as students in further education. Each section of this summary provides a case study of an evaluation which answers the following questions:

• Who was the research with?

• What was the context?

• What did we learn?

• What are the limitations of these findings?
